The story
Baklava Mix: A Taste of Every Classic
Can’t choose just one? Our Baklava Mix brings together an assortment of traditional Syrian sweets in one box. Crisp filo pastry, golden syrup, and generous nuts in different shapes and fillings, so every bite is a little different. In Dutch it is known as ‘Gemengde Baklava’ and in Arabic as مكس بقلاوة. It is the perfect way to end a meal at Op Saj Kareem in Amsterdam Noord.
What Is Baklava?
Baklava is a layered pastry dessert made from paper-thin sheets of filo dough, chopped nuts, and sweet syrup. It has been enjoyed across the Levant and the wider Middle East for centuries. In Syria, especially in Damascus and Aleppo, making these sweets is a true craft passed down through generations of pastry makers.
Why Choose an Assortment?
Ordering a selection is the best way to discover the variety of Middle Eastern pastry. Instead of a single type, you get a range of classic pieces, from rolled fingers to layered squares and nests. Some are rich with pistachio, others with walnut or cashew. Each shape has its own texture: some are extra crunchy, others soft and syrupy.
It is ideal for sharing with friends, family, or colleagues, and it makes a thoughtful gift when visiting someone’s home, just like in Syrian tradition.
Made the Traditional Syrian Way
Syrian pastry is famous for its delicate, buttery layers and balanced sweetness. Every piece in the box is layered with thin filo, brushed with butter, filled with nuts, and baked until golden and shatteringly crisp. It is then finished with fragrant syrup so it stays moist without being overly sweet.
What You Can Expect
- A selection of different traditional shapes
- Fillings such as pistachio, walnut, and cashew
- Crisp, flaky filo pastry
- Light, fragrant syrup
- Freshly prepared sweets, ready to share
The Different Shapes Explained
Part of the fun of an assortment is trying the different shapes side by side. Rolled fingers are thin and crunchy, with a light nut filling in the centre. Layered squares are the most classic, with many sheets of pastry stacked around a generous nut layer. Nest shapes are made with shredded pastry and topped with whole pistachios, giving them a delicate, crispy texture. Every shape offers a slightly different balance of pastry, nuts, and syrup, so you can find your own favorite.
A Sweet Syrian Tradition
In Syrian homes, sweets like these are served during celebrations, holidays such as Eid, and whenever guests come to visit. Offering a tray of mixed pieces is a sign of generosity and hospitality. With every box we share a small part of that warm tradition with our guests in Amsterdam.
